Most living rooms need an 8x10 rug as a starting point — large enough for the front legs of a sofa and chairs to rest on. Smaller rooms under 12x12 ft often look better with a 5x8 used as an accent rather than trying to anchor the full seating arrangement. Larger rooms (14x16 ft or more) usually call for a 9x12 so furniture sits fully on the rug rather than just the front legs.
